When treating urushi, be aware of allergic reactions to urushiol, which is contained in urushi.
Urushi can cause skin irritation when it is wet, but once completely hardened, urushi is perfectly food-safe and is one of the most durable natural materials.

It is important to always wear rubber gloves when treating lacquer. The use of rubber gloves and arm covers prevents urushi from touching the skin. However, because lacquer vaporizes in miniscule amounts, people who easily get rashes from poison ivy or mango may get severely irritated even when wearing rubber gloves.
